The Hutchins Alto Violin was given deeper ribs and a longer front and back plate than a normal viola so that its power and resonance matched that of its brothers. Naturally, the additional plate length on the Alto Violin made it improbable, or at least very dangerous, for a musician to attempt playing it like the traditional viola. And so, instead, it was given a foot and played like a cello. |
