In a string quartet, the Tenor Violin fills the missing tonal gap found between the viola and the cello. It is tuned one octave lower than a traditional violin and because of this unusual tuning and its wider plates it carries a deeper resonating tone in the upper register where the traditional cello begins to sound a bit nasal.
